ALL RISE FOR THE KING OF BAKING The man who has helped Turn soggy boTToms inTo a naTional caTchphrase and has ensured ThaT baking is briTain’s sexiesT pasTime Tells us whaT he’s been up To…. you can guarantee that at 8pm on wednesday nights for the past few months the uk has ground to a halt. millions of us have been sitting, transfixed, in front of our televisions as the unlikely pairing of an elderly lady and a rather dashing middle-aged man have dispensed words of wisdom to a host of aspiring bakers. we may not have actually been in the tent with mary berry and paul hollywood but we’ve been with them every step of the way, glued to a show which has seen them crown the latest winner of The great british bake off. nobody could have ever predicted the popularity of this gentle programme which has single-handedly created a massive surge of interest in home baking. From pies to pastries, from bread to puddings, from cupcakes to quiches – britain is in the midst of a massive love affair with all things baked. and it has to be said that this is due, in no small part, to mr hollywood himself. he was in the north east earlier this year with his british baking live Tour which has been so successful that he is now back on the road. “i was amazed at how much fun we had and how knowledgeable our audiences were on the first tour,” he said. “i had such a good time that we decided to do it again”. his new book – Paul Hollywood’s British Baking – has just been published and is packed full of his favourites from around the uk. For a man for whom puds and cakes are a way of life, what would be his personal choice? “i love christmas pudding with custard,” he revealed. “and my best advice is to make it early as it does keep and then steam it just before christmas and it will be nicely matured.” Lakeland £9.99-£18.99 The success of bake off has created a whole resurgence of interest in baking and paul has some words of advice for those deciding to try it for the first time. “buy my book for starters,” he joked. “get a good set of scales and an oven thermometer and most importantly, clean your oven! “it’s amazing how many people don’t realise that a dirty oven can create hot spots and affect the temperature so it’s really important to ensure it’s clean.” his new book is “a compilation of my favourite recipes from all over the country”. “it’s a variety of recipes that i have had for years with new ones i’ve also discovered and it’s a real celebration of the best of regional baking.” currently he’s also hard at work at another celebrity bake-off, which should be screened early next year. and, with a special christmas edition of the programme already filmed, there’s no doubt that the master baker’s career continues to rise – hooray for hollywood! *paul hollywood’s british baking is published by bloomsbury, £25.
